These, are from a wild callery pear population in central South Carolina. In almost all cases, the tree heals from these wounds. Sapsuckers will occasionally attack Bradford pears, but this damage rarely does any real harm to the tree. The narrow branching angles cause trees to split in half, especially when subjected to ice and storm conditions. It does, however, suffer from severe branch splitting, especially in older trees (15+ years). The Bradford pear is relatively free of insect problems, though aphids sometimes colonize individual branches. For cultural and chemical control of Entomosporium leaf spot, please see HGIC 1081, Photinia (Red Tip). If untreated, this may be followed by leaf-drop. Reddish-purple leaf spots enlarge to create a general reddening and blight of the foliage. (For more information on fire blight of fruit trees, refer to HGIC 2208, Fire Blight of Fruit Trees).Įntomosporium leaf spot that damages the foliage of photinias (red tips) and Indian hawthorns is also a disease of callery pears, such as ‘Bradford’ and ‘Chanticleer’. Affected leaves will remain attached, and a shepherd’s hook bend in the twig may be noticed. Fire blight is a common problem of many pear species where the ends of twigs and leaves (and fruit, in fruit-producing trees) become blackened as the disease progresses further down the branches. The ‘Bradford’ cultivar of callery pear is relatively resistant, although not immune, to most pests and diseases, including fire blight. calleryana cultivar is no longer recommended (see below). In the fall, the leaves turn mahogany-red and sometimes bright orange-red. Fruits are about the size of a marble and are often eaten by birds. Small, round, brown fruit then appear but are hidden by the leaves. The flowers, unfortunately, have an unpleasant fragrance. Occasionally the tree will flower in the fall, usually due to some stress factor, like drought. Early spring flowering may last two weeks, but spring frosts may reduce bloom time. The most attractive feature of this thornless tree is the showy white flowers that appear before the leaves in the spring. What's wrong with version 1.3.0? It's activity simply drops dead without any notice or warning. Just be glad if you figured out how to set up Quicksilver and have it working for you. I've been through this damnable ritual too many times to bother going into flame warz over it. And no, I won't honor rants in opposition to what I've said above. Don't screw up your working Quicksilver setup for the sake of yet-another buggy update. If you see a newer version, DO NOT UPGRADE until you've tested it out on some other test volume. And yes, if you complain to the project team, they'll get all defensive and denial mode on you. Sadly, going back a version in Quicksilver can means your triggers are all screwed up with little "?" marks next to the, meaning you have to literally set them up from scratch all over again. I end up going back to the only version that I've ever found to reliably work for my setup: v1.1.3. Every single time I've updated Quicksilver on my systems, it has CHOKED. Ungeeking it would earn it 5 stars.Īs usual: BEWARE updating Quicksilver. Therefore, I knock off 2 stars in the score. As such, I'd never recommend it to Granny. General conclusion: Great software with long term incoherent, geek inflicted quirks. When I do update, I save a copy of the currently working version first in order to be able to restore it if the new version of Quicksilver manages to break something, which it notoriously has in the past. I've also found it dangerous to update to the latest version, creating what is for me the unique situation of avoiding updates. For example, "Unable to locate 1Password logins Please set the 1Password 3rd party integration file'." means what? Good luck ungeeking the lingo. It often provides geeky, obscure notification messages that are entirely useless. If you want to save it, you have to manually name it from 'Untitled'. The version Changes web page hasn't been titled.Instead, it can run off the bottom of the desktop, making it impossible to see all the updates or click the button at the bottom to install them. If there are plugin updates available, the list window isn't smart enough to allow scrolling within the space provided by your desktop. ![]() The auto update process runs to what appears to be completion, then it FAILs, forcing the user to manually download the latest version, Quit running Quicksilver, then manually install the app and run it.However, it has some consistent, long-term problems that the developers willfully ignore. I use Quicksilver all day, every day and am grateful for its existence. Quicksilver, Default Folder, Path Finder, Alfred, I would add FinderPop (sadly not more updated by the good Turly but still NECESSARY and still 'almost working') are keeping our MacINTOSHES (!!!) on the original path tracked by Stev, making them, if carefully 'tuned up' still the best and most lovely OS: powerful while friendly.Īpple developer should learn by these guys instead to be 'corrupted by avidity'! Then there are experienced developers that keep making year after year more perfect their products, not discouraged be having been abandoned by Apple, if not even fought as atheists in Egypt. There comes out often new system utilities made by developers full of goodwill and visions that I encourage as I can but seem to be a bit lost facing the many traps put with purpose and bugs lazily left in MacOS evolving to downgrade the Macs towards iOs and phone users, as the smart asses of the marketing imposes to satisfy the avid, bulimic hunger of the stakeholders of a company that once upon a time was lead by someone whose aim and priority was to build the best computers of the world. Quicksilver has a modular structure which means features for interaction with a whole host of of other applications (iTunes, 1Password, Safari, Microsoft Office) can be done after installing the relevant plugin. Quicksilver indexes and parses only selected parts of the contents of your hard drive in the Catalog, which means it locates and displays the items matching your search quickly. As an example, if you want to find an application hidden in the depths of your file system, simply activate Quicksilver with a keystroke, type a few letters of the application's name, then hit Return or Enter to launch it, or tab and type to find an action such as Quit, Trash, Email To., Run at Login, Move To., Get Info, Reveal, the list goes on. Quicksilver allows you to find what you need quickly and easily, then act upon these objets as you see fit. Dwarf Myrtle Plant Careĭwarf myrtle plant care is fairly straightforward when grown in the correct USDA zone, as the plant is highly adaptable to a variety of conditions. The new spring growth has a scent akin to bayberry when the foliage is bruised. Dwarf wax myrtle is a dioecious plant, which bears silvery blue-grey berries on female plants following the yellow spring/winter blossoms. The leaves of the dwarf wax myrtle are heavily dotted with resin on both the dark green top and the brownish olive undersides, giving it a two-toned appearance. This thicket-like growth can be curtailed through pruning the plant to contain its spread as part of the care of dwarf myrtle. Dwarf wax myrtle has a stoloniferous root system or spreading habitat (through underground runners) that tends to produce a thicket or dense colony of plants that are useful for erosion management. The fine wispy foliage of dwarf wax myrtle looks lovely as a pruned hedge or it may be limbed up to form an attractive specimen plant. Valued for its aromatic, evergreen foliage and its 3 to 4 foot (.9 to 1 m.) manageable height, growing dwarf myrtle is also adaptable to full sun or partial shade in a wide range of soils from boggy to arid. Wax myrtle will generally have larger leaves than the dwarf variety and will attain a height a couple of feet taller (5 to 6) than the dwarf. Apparently, the genus Myrica was split into Morella and Myrica, so wax myrtle is sometimes called Morella cerifera and sometimes called Myrica cerifera.
